Bean Blossom is The Winner - Bluegrass Event of the Year

Bill MonroeIndianapolis, IN -- The Bill Monroe Music Park and Campground is proud to announce the 47th Annual Bill Monroe Memorial Bean Blossom Bluegrass Festival is the recipient of the 2013 International Bluegrass Music Association’s (IBMA) Bluegrass Event of the Year Award. The winners of this year’s IBMA awards were announced last week during the association’s World of Bluegrass held in Raleigh, NC. Park owner and festival producer, Dwight Dillman said, “I just want to say that I appreciate all of you for supporting Bean Blossom. Thanks to all the staff, the festival goers, the bands, sponsors and IBMA. See you next year!”

Bluegrass Personality Carol Beaugard Awarded Brown Jug Honors

Carol BeaugardActress, Bluegrass radio personality and artist Carol Beaugard received the Brown Jug Award at the 14th annual Park Slope Bluegrass and Old-Time Music Jamboree. This award recognizes her contributions to bluegrass music in the northeast. She follows a list of well known recipients including Stephanie Ledgin, Bill Knowlton, Pat Conte and Doug Tuchman, among others.

IBMA Bluegrass Music Momentum Awards Announced

Danny Clark Momentum AwardRaleigh, NC -- The Momentum Awards were presented at the Showcase Luncheon on Wednesday, September 25 during the International Bluegrass Music Association's (IBMA) World of Bluegrass event in Raleigh, North Carolina. These awards began last year when the IBMA inaugurated the IBMA Momentum Awards after a year of close input, analysis, and preparation. These awards are meant to recognize musicians and industry professionals in the early stages of their bluegrass careers. It is not a peoples’ choice, popularity or member-voted award, but a juried award by notable peers. Input from all constituencies is considered by said jury. Essentially, the Momentum Awards recognize the best “up and comers."

Sam Bush Receives Nomination for CMA Musician of the Year

Sam BushFor the third consecutive year, Sam has been nominated for Musician of the Year by the Country Music Association. The Musician of the Year category mirrors 2012 with Sam Bush (mandolin), who was nominated in the category for the first time in 2011; along with Paul Franklin (steel guitar); Dan Huff (guitar); Brent Mason (guitar); and the current title holder Mac McAnally (guitar).

Steve Martin’s Prize for Excellence In Banjo Awarded to Jens Kruger

Jens Kruger North Wilkesboro, NC -- The Kruger Brothers have announced the 2013 Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo has been awarded to their own banjo player extraordinaire Jens Kruger. Kruger was named as the fourth recipient of the Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass Music yesterday. Kruger is known for his innovative banjo composition and performance that integrates folk music with European classical music. Kruger is the first North Carolina resident and first winner born outside the of the United States.

Dailey & Vincent Up For Multiple Dove Awards

The Gospel Side of Dailey & VincentThe nominees for the 44th Gospel Music Association Dove Awards have been announced by The Gospel Music Association (GMA). Bluegrass favorites Dailey & Vincent find their name scattered throughout the various categories and even as participants on both the Song of the Year nomination and Country Song of the Year for "From My Rags To His Riches", Devin McGlamery featuring Dailey & Vincent. They come up again for the Bluegrass Album of the Year and twice for Bluegrass Song of the Year.

Loretta Lynn to Receive Presidential Medal of Freedom

Loretta LynnWashington, DC -- President Barack Obama named sixteen recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the Nation’s highest civilian honor, presented to individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors. The awards will be presented at the White House later this year. Among this year's recipients will be Country Music Icon, Loretta Lynn.

John McEuen to Receive Charlie Poole Lifetime Achievement Award

John McEuenJohn McEuen will be the recipient of this year's Lifetime Achievement Award at the 18th annual Charlie Poole Music Festival in Eden, N.C. this weekend. The festival celebrates the music of Charlie Poole and his bandmates, The North Carolina Ramblers. Poole was a pioneer in music and an early entertainer in the country and bluegrass music genres. Poole and the band went to New York City in 1925, auditioned for Columbia Records, and recorded four tracks for the label.

5th West Virginia Music Hall of Fame Inductees Announced

John Cloyd Miller “Cloud of Dust” Places #1 in Bluegrass Category

Miller is a vocalist, guitarist and mandolin player for the Asheville-based band, Red June, a nationally touring acoustic Americana trio that includes his wife, fiddler and vocalist Natalya Weinstein, and multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Will Straughan. The winning song, “Cloud of Dust,” appears on Red June’s 2012 release, em>Beauty Will Come.

Randall Franks Inducted to Independent Country Music Hall of Fame

Carter of the Carter Family, Pop Stoneman of the Stoneman Family, Uncle Dave Macon and Fiddlin’ John Carson in the Independent Country Music Hall of Fame. Franks was inducted alongside several industry friends including Leona Williams, Razzy Bailey, Jean Shepherd, Jimmy C. Newman, the late Billie Jo Spears, Glenn Douglas Tubb, Jerry and Helen Burke, Leslie Elliott, Jim Lusk, Phyllis Cole and the late Johnny Carson.

Finalists were selected earlier for this year's annual Chris Austin Songwriting Contest, hosted by MerleFest 2013. Now in its 21st year, the contest is an extraordinary opportunity for aspiring writers to have their original songs heard and judged by a panel of music industry professionals, under the direction of this year’s volunteer contest chairperson, Grammy®-winning singer/songwriter Jim Lauderdale. MerleFest 2013 took place April 25 through 28 on the campus of Wilkes Community College in Wilkesboro, North Carolina. This year, John Cloyd Miller captured the first place prize in the Bluegrass category in the annual Chris Austin Songwriting Contest.
