Meet the legendary filmmaker at the Birthplace of Country Music Museum on June 18 at 7:00 p.m. as we screen his classic documentary The High Lonesome Sound. The audience is invited to ask questions and participate in a discussion about Cohen's work following the film.

BCM Achieves NETTA "Best of Show" Two Years Running

BCM AwardsBristol, VA/TN -- The Birthplace of Country Music (BCM) is proud to announce the organization has achieved "Best of Show," Northeast Tennessee Tourism Association's (NETTA) highest honor, for the Grand Opening of the Birthplace of Country Music Museum (BCMM). BCM, parent organization of BCMM and the annual Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion music festival, also took home three (3) Pinnacle Awards and a Merit Award at NETTA's annual awards luncheon held at the Foundation Events Facility in Historic Downtown Bristol on Thursday. This is the second "Best of Show" honor for BCM, having won last year for Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion.

New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music

 Celebrating American Roots MusicBristol, TN/VA -- The Birthplace of Country Music Museum (BCMM) explores the rich traditions in American music through New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music. Acquired from the Smithsonian Institution by BCMM, the installation once served as one of the Smithsonian's traveling exhibits. New Harmonies will be on view beginning March 18, 2015 and continuing through September 30, 2015.

Carter Family Project Concert with Fran Leadon & Leigh Anderson

The Carter Family ProjectFran Leadon and Leigh Anderson are a husband-wife team who have been recording the entire Carter family catalogue, and putting them online, all from their living room in Brooklyn, NY. They've been doing it for years and have created a community around the projects, where other young parents and pickers stop in to help with the recordings. Over the course of the project their apartment has become a gathering place for New York's old-time and bluegrass community.

The Carter Family: Lives and Legacies

Educators' Day Events at Birthplace of Country Music Museum

Birthplace of Country Music MuseumBristol, TN/VA -- In preparation for the Grand Opening of the Birthplace of Country Music Museum (BCMM), BCMM's Education Committee wants to ensure educators in both Virginia and Tennessee view the museum as an important educational resource. BCMM is committed to providing interdisciplinary material and experiences that will help teachers and students achieve their educational goals. In order to do so, BCMM is planning an Educators’ Day on July 22, 2014 and two days of in-services for regional teachers on July 23 and July 24, 2014. These events will offer educators from our region a “sneak peek” at the new museum before Grand Opening Events Weekend August 1-3. It will also offer an opportunity to earn professional development/in-service hours.

After 87 Years, The Bristol Sessions are Reborn

Bristol Sessions LabelIn 1927, Ralph S. Peer went to Bristol, TN/VA with his recording gear. Little did he know what the impact of that journey would become. He captured the local artists on his recording equipment and then released them on records for radio and purchase. The Bristol Sessions, as they have become known, resulted in the biggest explosion of music that we call "The Big Bang of Country Music." It was a bang heard coast to coast through radio and, it was a hit. However, it didn't stop there. The following year, "The Johnson City Sessions" were recorded. Johnson City is just south west of Bristol. Now, a new piece is coming together.

Referred to as the "big bang of country music," the 1927 Bristol Sessions changed the industry forever. The Birthplace of Country Music Museum, in affiliation with the Smithsonian Institution, will tell the story of Bristol's musical heritage and its impact on the world.
