Carter Fold Presents Grayson Highlands Band with Adam Steffey

Carter Family Fold Special Christmas Event Saturday, Dec 19th

Carolina ExpressSaturday, December 19th, 2015, at 7:30 p.m. the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, will present a special Christmas program. In lieu of admission, please bring a donation of canned goods for the local food bank (suggested amount $10 per person). Those not bringing a canned goods donation are asked to make a donation of $10 for adults with all proceeds going to the Food Bank. Anyone under 12 will be admitted free of charge. Those attending are asked to bring finger foods, two-liter drinks, and cups, plates, or napkins. Christmas music will be performed as refreshments are served. Afterwards, we’ll have music by Carolina Express. Musicians donate their time for this special Christmas show.

Town Branch Bluegrass BandHiltons, VA -- As long as bluegrass music has echoed through the hills and valleys of the Appalachian region, musicians of all ages have gathered together to play and preserve their favorite style of music. This southwestern Virginia group showcases the traditional songs of yesterday, along with the driving sound of a modern style. The group began doing back porch picking and performing at local events seven years ago. Town Branch Bluegrass is now one of the region’s hottest new bands. Emi SunshineHiltons, VA -- Saturday, November 28, 2015, at 7:30 p.m. the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, will present a concert of Appalachian music by Emi Sunshine. It’s impossible to explain the exceptional talents of Emi Sunshine, a 10-year old east Tennessee prodigy who has captured the nation’s attention as a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. Steeped in Appalachian music, she is a true vocal stylist, one who instinctively knows how to interpret the nuances of a song with her impressive range, even though she has yet to gain the life experience and empathy seemingly necessary to fully comprehend the words she sings. Despite a given name that reflects optimism, she is drawn to dark themes in music – like that of the Louvin Brothers. The Tennessean is just the latest to describe her as an old soul – noting Onstage, this soul’s presence is commanding and her singing voice authentic and folksy. While her youth might remind many of Taylor Swift, a more apt comparison would be to artists such as Dolly Parton, Alison Krauss, or members of the Carter Family.

Carter Fold Presents New Ballard’s Branch Bogtrotters Saturday

New Ballard's Branchy BogtrottersThe New Ballard’s Branch Bogtrotters took their group’s name from the original Bogtrotters, the famous Galax, Virginia, area band of the 1930s, and because band leader Dennis Hall lives on Ballard’s Branch. Galax is home to the world-renowned Old Time Fiddler’s Convention, and the area has traditionally produced some of the country’s finest old time string bands. Carrying on that rich musical tradition, the New Ballard’s Branch Bogtrotters features Dennis Hall on guitar, Leon Frost on mandolin, Jesse Morris on bass, Eddie Bond on fiddle, and Josh Ellis on banjo. The guys have been playing together for over nearly fifteen years. Saturday, November 21st, 2015, at 7:30 p.m. the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, will present a concert by the New Ballard’s Branch Bogtrotters old time band.

Fiddlin’ Carson Peters Band Plays Carter Fold Nov 14

Fiddlin’ Carson PetersHiltons, VA -- Carson Peters, or “Fiddlin’ Carson Peters,” as he is becoming known, started playing fiddle at the ripe old age of three when his parents bought him a 1/8 size fiddle. By age four, he was playing in fiddle competitions and jamming at musical festivals. Carson has continued to hone the fiddling and singing talents that God so graciously blessed him with and has won many competitions along the way. Saturday, November 14th, 2015, at 7:30 p.m., the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, will present a concert by the Fiddlin’ Carson Peters Band.

Wayne Henderson and Friends Return to Carter Fold Sat Nov 7

Wayne HendersonHiltons, VA -- Wayne Henderson’s top-notch finger-picking is a source of great pleasure and pride to his friends, family, and neighbors in Grayson County, Virginia. His guitar playing has also been enjoyed at Carnegie Hall, in three national tours of Masters of the Steel-String Guitar, and in seven nations in Asia. In addition to his reputation as a guitarist, Henderson is a luthier of great renown. He is a recipient of a 1995 National Heritage Award presented by the National Endowment for the Arts. He produces about twenty instruments a year, mostly guitars; he is almost as well-known for the mandolins he has made. Doc Watson owned a Henderson mandolin.

Admission to the concert is $10 for adults, children ages 6 to 11 $3, under age 6 free. Tickets will be available only at the door on the day of the concert. Doors will open at 1:00 p.m.

Over the past several years, the Mountain Park Old Time Band has been creating a stir in old time music circles. The group has five members, all of whom are very versatile and talented musicians. Hillbilly Gypsies in Concert at Carter Family Fold Oct 17

The Hillbilly GypsiesHiltons, VA -- The Hillbilly Gypsies are a West Virginia native string band who specialize in playing their own homegrown style of Appalachian old time music, mixed with a hard drivin’ bluegrass sound. In addition to their original material, the Hillbilly Gypsies play a mix of traditional bluegrass and catchy old fiddle tunes. They are best appreciated at a live show. The Gypsies perform in the old fashioned style, around a single microphone. Their show has the feel of a barn dance, and it transports you back in time. One thing’s for sure – you’ll want to get up and dance. They’ve been a group for over ten years, and they have played at many national festivals, concert halls, and theaters. Hogslop String Band Entertains Historic Carter Family Fold

Hogslop String BandSaturday, October 10th, 2015, at 7:30 p.m., the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, will present a concert of old time music by the Hogslop String Band. The band is a Nashville based old time string band comprised of five energetic young musicians hailing from Georgia, Tennessee, California, and North Carolina. Featuring Casy Meikle and Kevin Martin on fiddles, Graham Sherrill on banjo, Gabriel Kelley on guitar, and Casey “Pickle” McBride on the washtub bass, these boys surely raise a ruckus.

Whitetop Mountain Band Returns to Carter Fold Saturday

Whitetop Mountain BandHiltons, VA -- Saturday, October 3rd, 2015, at 7:30 p.m., the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, will present a concert of old time music by the Whitetop Mountain Band. Whitetop Mountain Band is a family-based band from the highest mountains of Virginia. Whitetop is an area rich in old time music tradition, and this band has deep roots in mountain music. The band’s members have worked tirelessly to preserve the region’s style of old time fiddling and banjo picking and are legendary musicians and teachers of the style. Their shows are high energy and unlike any other show you have ever seen. There’s everything from fiddle and banjo instrumentals to powerful solos and harmony vocals on blues, classic country, honky tonk, traditional bluegrass numbers, old timey ballads, originals, four-part mountain gospel songs – and some flat foot dancing. Well-known for their charisma on stage and their ability to engage audiences of all ages, this group has been performing at the Carter Fold since shows first began at the A.P. Carter Grocery in the 1970s.

The spark the Bluegrass Mountaineers ignite while performing traditional bluegrass music is very unique. Their burning desire (fueled by their experience and music shared by four generations to continue a family tradition) is one of the world’s most valued treasures in such a wonderful music style. The fourth generation of the Bluegrass Mountaineers, Chris Wilcox is eager to learn the instruments at the young age of eight years old. In a quest to carry on the traditional bluegrass sound, the Bluegrass Mountaineers combine old time claw hammering, classic country yodeling, and twin fiddles to showcase their unique style. All members of the Bluegrass Mountaineers take turns demonstrating their vocal and instrumental abilities. Their love for the traditional, genuine bluegrass sound is evident every time they take the stage.

Michael Feagan and Fiddlegrass Hit Carter Fold Saturday

Michael FeaganHiltons, VA -- Saturday, September 12th, 2015, at 7:30 p.m., the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, will present a concert of bluegrass music by Michael Feagan and Fiddlegrass. Michael Feagan has played with some of bluegrass music’s finest – Bill Monroe and Larry Sparks to name a few. He’s also worked with David Peterson & 1946 as well as country singer and guitarist Jerry Reed. Michael accompanied Kody Norris on fiddle at the Carter Fold. Michael will be backed by Fiddlegrass – some of bluegrass music’s finest musicians. His newest release – A Fiddler’s Journey – is now available. The CD features dance tunes that even the most seasoned musicians might not know. The release exemplifies the versatility and experience that make Michael’s career so diverse and interesting. A true gentleman, Michael proudly represents bluegrass music at its’ finest.
