2014 FreshGrass Award Winners Announced

Twisted PineCongratulations to the winners of the 2014 FreshGrass Award band, duo, and banjo contests. There were countless bluegrass stars who sent us amazing submissions from all over the country. The FreshGrass Award jury was happy to find Twisted Pine, Quiles & Cloud, and Ricky Mier especially skillful and original. The winners received cash, prizes, a recording session at Compass Records’ studio in Nashville, and a spot onstage at FreshGrass 2015.

Luthier Activities at FreshGrass

 Sauve GuitarsThe Fretboard Journal – the boutique magazine for guitar, mandolin, and stringed instrument players – joins Suavé Guitars founder Steve Suavé and a stellar group of artisans for demonstrations and discussions of fiddle, mandolin, banjo, open-back banjo, and guitar.

2014 FreshGrass Award Finalists Announced

You'll be able to hear all fifteen of these acts at pop-up performances during the festival, so keep an eye and ear out as you explore. Our contest events on Saturday and Sunday mornings are open to everyone, so come down and cheer on your favorite musicians.

FreshGrass Festival Kicks Off with a Great Duo

Michael Daves & Tony TrischkaKicking off the FreshGrass festivities on Friday, September 19, will be an extra-special collaboration between two all-time favorite bluegrass artists, flatpicker Michael Daves and banjoist Tony Trischka. It will be the first time at the festival for both of them, and this pairing sets the stage for the first annual FreshGrass Duo Award the following morning. Daves and Trischka are both renowned teachers and formidable players. We are eager to hear their spin on the classic duo form.

FreshGrass Award Announces All-Star Jury for 2014

Alison BrownNorth Adams, MA -- Storied bluegrass and roots performers Chris Pandolfi of The Infamous Stringdusters, Leigh and Eric Gibson of The Gibson Brothers, and longtime FreshGrass co-conspirator Alison Brown select the best new acts in banjo, duo, and band competitions as the FreshGrass Award jury during the eponymous festival, September 19-21, 2014, at MASS MoCA.

The Duhks Join FreshGrass Lineup, Daily Lineups Announced

The DuhksNorth Adams, MA -- FreshGrass, MASS MoCA's annual bluegrass and roots festival, is famous for its lineup, its workshop programs in conjunction with The Berklee College of Music, its urban setting nestled in the bucolic Berkshire mountains - and infamous for its late-night, moonshine slushies-fueled parties that close out the first two nights of music. This year, Canadian fusion-folk stars The Duhks plan to raise the roof when they play the late show on opening night. The festival just released its day-by-day lineup for September 19-21, 2014.

2014 FreshGrass Award Open for Submissions

MASS MoCANorth Adams, MA -- The FreshGrass Award, a highlight of the eponymous three-day bluegrass and roots music festival held each fall at MASS MoCA, crowns up-and-coming musicians who offer a fresh take on the genre. Now in its second year, the Award expands from one category to three - giving unsigned bands, duos, and banjo players a chance to compete for cash prizes totaling $15,000, recording time at Compass Records' studio in Nashville, and a main stage slot at FreshGrass 2015. The competition, judged by a panel of industry professionals, is held concurrently with the festival on September 19-21, 2014, and contest performances are open to the festival audience.

Workshops Announced for FreshGrass Sept 20-22 Bluegrass Festival

MASS MoCANorth Adams, MA -- The FreshGrass Festival at Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art’s (MASS MoCA) has one of the best line-ups in bluegrass and now they have a workshop line-up to match. During the weekend you will be able rest your dancin' feet, and take part in our lively workshop offerings which range from theory classes to instrument-specific playing techniques. All workshops are free with admission. Space is limited so register on the day of the event when you arrive at the festival -- first come, first serve. Workshops will be held throughout the FreshGrass festival weekend, September 20-22, on the campus of MASS MoCA.

FreshGrass Award Finalists Compete for $10,000 in Prizes

MASS MoCANorth Adams, MA -- FreshGrass, MASS MoCA's fall festival of bluegrass and roots music, chooses six finalists in its inaugural bluegrass and roots band contest, The FreshGrass Award. The finalists compete for $10,000 cash prizes as well as a Nashville recording session in Compass Records studios with mentoring from FreshGrass performer Alison Brown. Bands were selected by a panel of industry insiders and performers, and bands will perform for that same jury during FreshGrass bluegrass music festival, held September 20-22 at MASS MoCA in North Adams, Mass.
