FreshGrass Announces First Wave Lineup for 2017

Del McCoury BandNorth Adams, MA FreshGrass, Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art's (MASS MoCA) 3-day festival of bluegrass and progressive roots music, announces the first round of bands for its upcoming September fest, with Brandi Carlile, Railroad Earth, The Del McCoury Band with special guest David Grisman, Del & Dawg, The Wood Brothers, Bill Frisell: Harmony, Alison Brown, Son Little, The Brothers Comatose, Carrie Rodriguez, Darol Anger's Republic of Strings, Hackensaw Boys, Rob Ickes & Trey Hensley, The Suitcase Junket, Nell Robinson & Jim Nunally Band, and 2016 FreshGrass Award winners The Last Revel, Victor Furtado, Julian Pinelli, and The Page Turners. FreshGrass, to be held at MASS MoCA on September 15-17, 2017, features bluegrass traditionalists and innovators on four stages and in every nook and cranny of its 28-building, 16-acre campus. 2017's festival will be the first FreshGrass held since MASS MoCA's Building 6 — slated to open in May of this year — has been open, with an additional 120,000 sq. ft. of expanded galleries and performance space.

Bobby Osborne is Oldest Artist to Launch Pledgemusic Campaign

Bobby OsborneNashville, TN -- Legendary Opry star and bluegrass pioneer Bobby Osborne announced via Facebook that he is launching a crowd funding campaign with PledgeMusic this month to record a new album. At the age of 84, Bobby is one of very few of his generation to embrace a crowd funding format, but Bobby says, “It reminds me of the fan clubs we used to have when we started. Fans are why we make the music, and I’ve always tried to interact with fans and listeners whenever I can.”

2015 FreshGrass Award Winners Announced

Old Salt UnionNorth Adams, MA -- Cheered on by festivalgoers and past winners alike, the 2015 FreshGrass Award highest accolades went to Old Salt Union in the band competition; Zoe & Cloyd won the duo; Catherine Bowness was judged best in banjo; and Bronwyn Keith-Hynes captured the fiddle prize. All competitors in four categories performed both an original and traditional tune for a jury led by Grammy Award-winner and master banjoist Alison Brown during Saturday and Sunday of the festival. The winners receive cash and prizes totaling $25,000, recording sessions at Compass Records in Nashville, Tennessee, and hand-crafted instruments from Deering and Eastman. All four winners return to North Adams in 2016 to perform at that year’s festival.

FreshGrass Presents FreshScores - Original Music Set to Silent Films

FreshGrass Award Finalists Confirmed

Finalists in the band, duo, banjo, and fiddle categories perform for a panel led by Grammy Award-winner and master banjoist Alison Brown on Saturday and Sunday of the festival, with winners announced on Sunday afternoon. Open for all festival-goers, the contests showcase the future of bluegrass and roots music when the bands play original and traditional tunes. With cash and prizes totaling $25,000, winners receive a performance spot at next year’s festival, recording sessions at Compass Records, and hand-crafted instruments from Deering and Eastman. FreshGrass hosts three days of music, with almost 50 acts taking the stage in North Adams on September 18-20, 2015.

2015 FreshGrass Award Open for Submissions

Now in its third year, the Award expands from three categories to four — giving unsigned bands, duos, and banjo and fiddle players a chance to compete for cash prizes totaling over $25,000, recording time at Compass Records’ studio in Nashville, and a slot on the stage at FreshGrass 2016.
