BMI to Challenge 100% Licensing in Federal Court

BMINew York, NY -- ASCAP and BMI, the country's two leading performing rights organizations (PROs) collectively representing more than one million songwriters, composers and music publishers, have joined forces to fight the Department of Justice's (DOJ) recent interpretation of their respective consent decrees and to push for consent decree reform. United in their belief that the DOJ's decision to mandate 100% licensing will cause unnecessary chaos in the marketplace and place unfair financial burdens and creative constraints on songwriters and composers, the two organizations are pursuing a joint campaign: BMI through litigation and ASCAP through legislative reform.

BMI Distributes Historic 75-Year High of $840 Million on $1 Billion Revenues

BMINew York, NY -- Broadcast Music, Inc® (BMI®), the global leader in music rights management, today reported that it had achieved the highest revenues and royalty distributions in the Company’s 75-year history for its fiscal year ended June 30th. BMI generated record revenues of $977 million, and distributed and administered more than $840 million to its songwriters, composers and music publishers. These results cap a ten-year period during which BMI has generated more than $8 billion in revenues and distributed royalties of more than $7.5 billion. BMI operates on a non-profit-making basis and returns more than 85% of all revenue to the musical creators and copyright owners it represents.

BMI Wins Pandora Rate Court Battle

BMIIn a victorious ruling for all BMI-affiliated songwriters, composers and music publishers, Broadcast Music, Inc. received a favorable decision from a New York Rate Court after a lengthy legal battle over the value of the BMI repertoire to the Pandora digital music service.

Kay Clary to Be Honored at 7th Louise Scruggs Memorial Forum

Tom T. Hall Receives Icon AwardNashville, TN -- Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI), the global leader in music rights management, honored its Country Songwriter, Song and Publisher of the Year at the 60th annual BMI Country Awards held at the company’s Nashville, TN building. Also saluted were the writers and publishers of the past year’s 50 most-performed songs on radio and TV from BMI’s country repertoire. In addition, the incredible songwriting career of Tom T. Hall was celebrated by naming him a BMI Icon.

BMI Celebrates Tom T. Hall's Career with Icon Award

Tom T. HallBMI will celebrate the incredible songwriting career of Tom T. Hall by naming him a BMI Icon at the company’s 60th annual Country Awards. The private ceremony will be held on Tuesday, October 30 at BMI’s Music Row building in Nashville. The BMI Icon award is given to songwriters who have had a “unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers.” An all-star musical tribute will pay homage to Hall, who joins a list of past honorees that includes Billy Sherrill, John Fogerty, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, Isaac Hayes, Merle Haggard, Brian Wilson, Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, the Bee Gees, Bobby Braddock, Ray Davies, James Brown and more. Tom T. Hall has been recognized for his contributions to bluegrass music as well as other genres.
