Ben Eldridge Retires From The Seldom Scene, Rickie Simpkins Joins The Band

Ben EldridgeThe Seldom Scene announces that founding member Ben Eldridge has retired after nearly 45 years with the Grammy-nominated band. Eldridge is the last original member of the popular bluegrass quintet, but the band will continue to perform, with Rickie Simpkins on banjo and fiddle.

Rickie Simpkins to Perform With Dave Sharp Trio at JV’s Restaurant, Dec. 9

Rickie SimpkinsSilver Spring, MD -- Local singer/songwriter Dave Sharp will perform at JV’s Restaurant, in Falls Church, Virginia, on Sunday, December 9th, with his acoustic group, the Dave Sharp Trio. Appearing with the trio will be special guest, Rickie Simpkins, renowned fiddle and mandolin player. Simpkins tours and records with Emmylou Harris and other national artists, including Tony Rice. Last spring, Sharp released a new CD, Rural Roots, on Odessa Records. Simpkins performed on five album tracks and helped a great deal with final mixing. Simpkins is well versed in bluegrass, folk, country, and American music.

Friends of Mark Newton Benefit A Success

Friends of Mark Newton BenefitNashville, TN -- The Friends of Mark Newton Golf Outing and Music Event held on August 24th in Fredricksburg, Virginia, Newton’s childhood home, to assist the Newton Family with medical expenses following Mark’s hospitalization this Summer was a huge success. Mark Newton was hospitalized unexpectedly earlier this year at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville while preparing for the 20th Anniversary Graves Mountain Festival of Music, an event that Newton helped create with the Graves Family, in Syria, Virginia. The August 24th fundraiser had over 34 golf team participants and culminated with a special concert reunion of the Virginia Squires (Rickie and Ronnie Simpkins, Sammy Shelor, and Mark Newton) and special guests that included Grammy Award winning artist Carl Jackson, Dudley Connell of the Seldom Scene, and Ralph Stanley II among many others.

Friends of Mark Newton BenefitNashville, TN -- Friends of Mark Newton have announced a special fundraiser on August 24th to include a golf outing and live bluegrass music in Fredricksburg, Virginia, Newton’s childhood home. The benefit is to assist the Newton Family with medical expenses Mark Newton incurred when he was hospitalized unexpectedly earlier this year at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville while preparing for the 20th Anniversary Graves Mountain Festival of Music. Newton helped create the Graves Mountain Festival along with the Graves Family, in Syria, Virginia. The event culminates with an evening concert featuring the music of Mark Newton and Steve Thomas and their The StillHouse Band (Newton’s current touring band). A full entertainment line-up for the evening music concert features a special reunion of the bluegrass group, Virginia Squires, with Ronnie and Rickie Simpkins, Sammy Shelor, and Mark Newton.
