Abingdon's Free Music on The Lawn Moves Inside for Sunday

Poionter BrothersAbingdon, VA -- Due to a chilly forecast, The Music on The Lawn concert for Sunday, April 10th, will move inside to the Ballroom at The Martha. Featuring the Pointer Brothers music, the concert is free and scheduled for 1-3pm.

Chris Austin Songwriting ContestWilkesboro, NC -- The Chris Austin Songwriting Contest, hosted by MerleFest, announces finalists for the 2016 contest. MerleFest 2016, presented by Window World, takes place from April 28-May 1, on the campus of Wilkes Community College in Wilkesboro, N.C. Now in its 24th year, the contest is an extraordinary opportunity for aspiring writers to have their original songs heard and judged by a panel of music industry professionals, under the direction of volunteer contest chairperson, Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Jim Lauderdale. The first place winners will receive $600 cash from MerleFest and a performance slot on the Cabin Stage on Friday night.

The Winding Stream – the Carters, the Cashes, and the Course of Country Music

The Carter FamilySunday, April 10th, 2016, at 2:30 p.m., the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, will present a special documentary screening of The Winding Stream – the Carters, the Cashes, and the Course of Country Music. The documentary was nearly ten years in the making and contains some of the last interviews with Janette Carter, Joe Carter, and Johnny Cash. There will be music by Eugene Wolfe & Friends both before and after the screening. A question and answer panel will follow the screening.

If you ever saw Larry Sigmon and the Unique Sound of the Mountains, you know the sound was unlike anything you ever heard before. Over the course of more than ten albums and several years of performing, Larry Sigmon and his late partner Barbara Poole continuously brought the house down with a variety of fast-paced mountain music tunes fueled by Sigmon’s high-speed claw hammer banjo picking and Poole’s infectious “heartbeat” bass plucking. While there were several groups out there that could get you onto the dance floor, no old time band could wear out your clogging shoes faster than the Unique Sound of the Mountains.

Initial "Bluegrass Nights at the Ryman" Lineup Announced

Bluegrass Jam's Fundraising Total Exceeds $200,000

Bluegrass Marathon JamNeil Hamrick's eyes glistened with tears as he was presented the Maryland Distinguished Citizen Proclamation by Gov. Larry Hogan's Deputy Press Secretary Lorena Rivera. A letter sent to the Governor and County Executive's offices describes Hamrick as "a selfless individual who works tirelessly behind the scenes and in front for the Fisher House organization." The presentation was made during Hamrick's 7th Annual Bluegrass Marathon Jam on Feb. 27, proclaimed "Neil Hamrick Day" by Hogan. Representatives from the County Executive's Office, Knights of Columbus and Fisher House Foundation were also in attendance and acknowledged Hamrick's contributions.

Whitetop Mountain Band Entertains Carter Family Fold March 26th

Whitetop Mountain BandHiltons, VA -- Saturday, March 26th, 2016, at 7:30 p.m., the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, will present a concert of old time music by the Whitetop Mountain Band. Whitetop Mountain Band is a family-based band from the highest mountains of Virginia. Whitetop is an area rich in old time music tradition, and this band has deep roots in mountain music. The band’s members have worked tirelessly to preserve the region’s style of old time fiddling and banjo picking and are legendary musicians and teachers of the style. Their shows are high energy and unlike any other show you have ever seen. There’s everything from fiddle and banjo instrumentals to powerful solos and harmony vocals on blues, classic country, honky tonk, traditional bluegrass numbers, old timey ballads, originals, four-part mountain gospel songs – and some flat foot dancing. Well-known for their charisma on stage and their ability to engage audiences of all ages, this group has been performing at the Carter Fold since shows first began at the A.P. Carter Grocery in the 1970s.

Old Crow Medicine ShowNorth Adams, MA -- FreshGrass, Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA)'s (MASS MoCA) 3-day festival of bluegrass and progressive roots music, announces the first round of bands for its upcoming September fest, with Old Crow Medicine Show, Glen Hansard, Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder, The Devil Makes Three, Rosanne Cash, a late-night hoedown by The Infamous Stringdusters, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Aoife O’Donovan, festival favorite Alison Brown, Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen, Stephane Wrembel, John Reischman and the Jaybirds, Mr. Sun, and 2015 FreshGrass Award winners Old Salt Union, Zoe & Cloyd, and Mile Twelve. FreshGrass, to be held at MASS MoCA on September 16-18, 2016, features bluegrass traditionalists and innovators on four stages and in every nook and cranny of its 28-building, 16-acre campus. This year’s festival marks an integrated partnership with No Depression, the quarterly journal for roots music and online roots music authority.
