The Music of the Stanley Brothers Book due Next Month

The Music of the Stanley BrothersThe premier guide to the lives and work of bluegrass icons Ralph and Carter Stanley will be released this January by the University of Illinois Press as part of their Music in American Life series. The 312 page book will by Gary Reid will include a foreward by Neil v. Rosenbert. Included will be a full discography and 51 black & white photographs.

Bluegrass Innovator and Pioneer George Shuffler has Died

George Shuffler Bluegrass Hall of Fame Recipient, George Shuffler passed away yesterday, April 7th, just shy of his 89th birthday. Shuffler was born in Valdese, North Carolina on April 15, 1925. Affectionately known as "The Third Stanley Brother" performed on many of bluegrass music's most historic recordings. George toured 20 years with the Stanley Brothers where he developed his unique cross picking guitar style that has been a big influence to many musicians. He was inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Hall of Fame in 2011 and was a recipient of the North Carolina Heritage Award in 2007. In 2011, Shuffler was inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Association's Hall of Fame along with Del McCoury. George Shuffler’s influences in bluegrass are as an innovative bass player, guitar stylist and featured vocalist and humorist, primarily as a sideman in some of the most important bands in the music’s history.

 The Lives and Music of the Stanley BrothersThe University Press of Mississippi has released David W. Johnson's first biography of two integral bluegrass music innovators and touchstones of old-time country music authenticity - Carter and Ralph Stanley. The 300 page volume includes multiple photographs of the brothers who contributed much to bluegrass and mountain music.

Library of Congress National Recording Registry Seeking Nominations

I Want You to VoteEach year since 2002 the National Recording Preservation Board (NRPB) and members of the public have nominated recordings to the National Registry. The breadth of nominations received highlights the richness of the nation's audio legacy and underscores the importance of assuring the long-term preservation of that legacy for future generations. Bluegrass music and related music (e.g., Charlie Poole) have a place in the registry. The Bluegrass music community is invited to contribute their suggestions for the National Recording Registry.
