Now in its 24th year, the contest is an extraordinary opportunity for aspiring writers to have their original songs heard and judged by a panel of music industry professionals, under the direction of volunteer contest chairperson, Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Jim Lauderdale. The first place winners will receive $600 cash from MerleFest and a performance slot on the Cabin Stage on Friday night.

Aspiring songwriters may submit entries to the contest using the online entry form or by mailing entries to: MerleFest/CASC, PO Box 120, Wilkesboro, NC 28697. Early birds take note: during the month of October and November, all entries for the Chris Austin Songwriting Contest (CASC) will receive an early entry discount price of $25 per entry. Submissions received in December and January will require a $30 fee per entry. The deadline to enter the CASC will be February 1, 2016.

2015 FreshGrass Award Open for Submissions

FreshGrassNorth Adams, MA -- The FreshGrass Award, a highlight of the eponymous three-day bluegrass and roots music festival held each fall at Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art’s (MASS MoCA), crowns up-and-coming musicians who offer a fresh take on the genre. Now in its third year, the Award expands from three categories to four — giving unsigned bands, duos, and banjo and fiddle players a chance to compete for cash prizes totaling over $25,000, recording time at Compass Records’ studio in Nashville, and a slot on the stage at FreshGrass 2016. The competition, judged by a panel of industry professionals led by the legendary FreshGrass favorite Alison Brown, is held during the festival on September 18-20, 2015, and contest performances are open to the festival audience.
