Patuxent Music has a few new albums out and Frank Wakefield, Taylor Baker & Friends is a jewel. This wonderful mandolin album features Frank Wakefield on first mandolin, Taylor Baker on second mandolin and solo mandolin, Brennen Ernst on guitar, Tom Mindte on third mandolin and accordion and Stefan Custodi on bass. Released last year, this album features 16 tracks showcasing the many styles of Frank, Taylor and Tom on the mandolin.

Mandolinist Sierra Hull To Perform First Night Boston Concert

Sierra HullFirst Night Boston, Berklee College of Music, and UMass Boston’s radio station, WUMB-FM 91.9 present bluegrass vocalist, mandolinist and songwriter Sierra Hull, a 2011 Berklee graduate, performing at the Berklee Performance Center on New Year's Eve, Tuesday, December 31, 2013. The concert is a centerpiece of this year's First Night Boston festival, and will be broadcast live on WUMB-FM, and webcast worldwide on, live from Berklee.

2013 Walnut Valley Festival Competition Winners Announced

Affectionately known as just "Winfield" by many of the annual attendees, this festival and the national music instrument finals are a highlight of the season. The various instrument competitions are finally over and the winners have been announced. Walnut Valley Festival offers attendees great entertainment and artists but, its probably the most famous for its various national and international instrument championships. Many of those competitions focus on the very instruments found in bluegrass music. Banjo, Flat Pick Guitar, Mandolin, Old-Time Fiddle and more attract musicians from around the globe to compete for the various awards.

Wildfire to Showcase at IBMA with New Member Chris Davis

Lloyd LoarAnnual Lloyd Loar’s Hometown Bluegrass Festival to be held at Marigold Meadows 1212 N. Cedar Street in Lewistown, Illinois. Why Lloyd Loar? Lloyd Loar's parents moved to Lewistown, IL in 1889 when Lloyd was three years old. Lloyd attended Lewistown High School from 1899 to 1903 and began performing in local music programs. Loar went on to study harmony, music theory, orchestration and piano. According to various documents*, Loar returned to his hometown later in life and established an Acoustical Research Laboratory. While Bill Monroe may have been “The Father of Bluegrass", the sound we associate with Monroe’s mandolin came from Lloyd Loar.
